Spotted Whippet

When Cathleen first started to consider getting into whippets we went to the races to meet breeders and their dogs. This is a sketch of a little bitch who stayed right around where we were sitting. She kept stopping in this very pose to watch the dogs on the track.

The whippet is really well shaded and shaped. You have totally captured the pose which characterize whippets. She looks three dimensional because you used the absolutes! There is white white and black black. The background makes sense to give the onlooker an idea of what the dog is looking at. I would like to challenge you to draw more dogs, without backgrounds as studies, perhaps practice with pens and washes. Quick sketches, lay it all out, slower more detailled sketches, start adding more realistic pieces to the drawing, and last but not least a nice long pose like this one. Such a study would be really beneficial to your exploration of more animals. It also may benefit you in other types of sketches.
